here is what it does [quote]:

Authentic 303 emulation based on the ABL2 engine

Drum module with selectable 808 or 909 sounds
Shuffle with variable amount for drum module

Transpose and randomizer for synth module

24 patterns per session (12 for 303, 12 for 808/909)
Pattern sequencer with up to 1000 bars

Session manager with realtime switching

High contrast GUI for use in clubs etc.
Supports autorotation to your preferred landscape orientation

On board quickstart manual

Supports multi-touch for knobs

The graphical user interface looks very very nice so far! I can’t wait to put my hands on this! According to Audiorealism it’s going to be in the App Store within the next 24 hours!

Check out their other youtube vids too!

The developer told me there are already plans for future improvements of this App. I hope those include my always asked for multiple phone/ipod sync.

Thanks too Leslie once again for the find!

[EDIT:] So .. now that I’ve got it, here are my first impressions:
+ the sound is really good, way better than Randgrid’s
+ shuffle on the drums
+ excellent graphical interface

+- no shuffle on the 303 (the original has no shuffle either, so)
+- only 808 or 909, the sounds (samples) are fat tho
+- only one 303, therefor better sound (Mike told me he chose sound quality and UI response over more voices)

- no step modulation like Randgrid
- no settings for single drums at all (not even single sound volume)
- no performance enhancing mute/solo page
- 303 patterns are always 16 steps, not even shorter

[EDIT 2:] Mike just told me where to find the “song mode” and the random

There is song sequencing, you have to double tap the Play button and then
it plays the patterns in progression as programmed. But it is a bit fiddly
and its missing insert/delete for editing song but I’m planning to add
that in an update

This is randomize pattern: press shift and then Gate to randomize
pattern. We also have alter pattern whish is shift and Down button (it
keeps the same notes but reorganizes them randomly).

Also there is more stuff to find in their forum!

So I’ll try to give you an overview which 303 App is able to do what.

First in the Round is Finger Bassline which was the first in the App Store. It is the most basic App featuring only the synth itself, but for me has the best sound of the three I’ve tested. It has a nice session management and the developer even started to create a Mac-to-iPhone/iPod sync application. Beside the fact that this is not working properly (at least at my side) I really love the fact that finally someone is taking this approach. I’m desperately looking forward to an open standard syncing Apps from Mac/PC to iPhone, from iPhone to iPhone or even from iPhone to Nintendo DS or whatever! It’s 5.99 Euros in the App Store

The second App I chose to be in this comparison is Randgrid. Actually Randgrid offers way more than just one 303 style synthesizer, it has two of them, plus a full grown drum computer, delay and distortion effects and a song sequencer. It costs the same 5.99 in the App Store like Finger Bassline, but it’s more like a little on-the-go Rebirth (if you still remember this quite historical program) than a synth to mix along your hardware studio. Btw. I left out Randgrid’s detune parameter for the sake of pure 303-like sound comparison. The oscillator detune is really nice sounding!

The third App is the new one I mentioned before. It’s called Digital Bassline DB-303. It features the most original GUI of those Apps, see the screenshot:

Unlike Finger Bassline, it brings distortion and delay which resemble the look of stomp boxes and can be tweaked in real time. It is the cheapest of all this Apps with it’s 3.99 Euro in the App Store. It has 4 pattern groups with 8 patterns each, but no file management like the other both. The Patterns in DB-303 can only be 16 steps long in the moment, Finger Bassline can do any number up to 64 steps and Randgrid can only do 16 steps per pattern too but you can chain them in the song sequencer to any number you want.
I personally found DB-303’s sound to be a bit weaker than Finger Bassline but superior to Randgrid’s synth (as I said I left out its detune here). The filter sounds a bit harsh too me, but judge yourself:

I have to mention that Noise.io is quite capable of 303 sound creation too, but I have not included it in this test because it’s way more than just a single oscillator bassline synth.

This funny sound generator is kinda unique. It features 15 oscillators of different waveforms (sine, saw, square, triangle, noise or a random pick of those) which you move in the stereo field and frequency with either your finger or by tilting the device. But they don’t follow your movement slavish, they are bouncing around that specified point in frequency and pan. So you get a broad and moving sound field.

See this example from the developers youtube channel:

The new version adds a low pass filter and a nice delay.

Get it in the App Store for 1.59 Euro.

Thanks to Leslie for the find! I downloaded this while i was still in bed this morning. It’s basically two simple bassline synths and a drumcomputer (2x 303 + a 909 -ish) in one App, dubbed the “mobile techno studio”.

It’s great fun! You can alter the pitch of each sound per step and modulate up to 8 parameters per step (so that covers all of them in the moment). It’s kinda like the machinedrum there.
Well quick copy and paste what the developers wrote here:

2x monosynth

dual oscillator

saw/sqare wave

detune

slide speed

24 db lowpassfilter

Although I couldn’t find all of those points yet .. where are the second Oscillators hidden? [Edit:] Found them. Reading the manual sometimes actually helps.
We see a early and unfinished shot of that App in the moment (Version 0.9b). It has lot’s of potential tho.

I’m missing features like:

more patterns

more drum samples, I’m just not into 909 sounds in the moment</il>

a mute & performance page or something like that

longer patterns, or chain functionality

more complex synthesis

Here’s my blurry webcam video:

It’s 5.49 Euros in the App Store.

[Edit:] from our comments:

I am the developer of Randgrid.

We will be ready to submit a new version to Apple for approval in a couple of days.

This version will include:

- Song sequencer (arrange your patterns into a song)
- File manager (load save your songs)
- More drumkits (including stereo samples)
- Lots if minor changes and buggfixes

Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions or feature request.

[Edit 3:] There is now a song sequencer on board, and it’s a very cool one too! Plus the file manager and mute and solo switches.

[EDIT] - it is out now! The internal server is easy to use, you can alternatively use Ecamm’s Phoneview and browse the Media folder (you’ll find your stuff in the DCIM folder). Now we all have to wait for Beatmaker or other Apps to use that way of sharing samples.
